One way of seeing this painting is as an image of the portal leading to heaven.  Another way is to see it as choices of the many doors that may lead to personal bliss.  The mysterious gray mountain shape is a kind of holy mountain hovering between the dark-starred space of the sky and the colorful gated structure of the surface.  There are many pathways your eyes can travel as they roam through the colored gateways toward and around the mountain and back again to the surface. But ultimately the deep blue stepping stones on the surface lead you to the peace of the deep dark of the night sky.
