The paintings for this exhibition came about from walking a dog in the presence of the ocean. The pictorial structure of horizon, palette, and the reflections of light on water are in dialogue with people’s never satiated fascination with the seascape.

Planetary Porcelain: Nerikomi Sculpture
by Cary Rapaport
“Planetary Porcelain” presents an extraordinary view of the solar system through the use of the nerikomi process—a complex Japanese ceramic technique that embeds multi-colored clays throughout the unfired porcelain body, ultimately creating specifically designed patterns on the surface as well. These works capture the features of each planet, from the blue marble we recognize as Earth to Jupiter’s bright striations and storms. As a result, this echoes the ever-changing nature of these celestial bodies that we have only ever glimpsed from the surface.
